After wearing many hats, including director, cinematographer, special effects technician and sound editor for several years, Claude devoted himself entirely to editing in the 90s. He is renowned for his work on such well-known TV series as SCOOP, ALYS ROBI: THE BROKEN DREAM and ER. Claude has also worked on feature films with such renowned directors as Pierre Falardeau, Louis Bélanger, Louis Godbout and Claude Demers. Catherine will also talk to him about one of his latest films, RU. Without further ado, we leave you to listen to Catherine and Claude’s discussion. Enjoy!

 We chose to speak with the young and prolific editor, Amélie Labrèche. After working for years as an assistant, Amélie made the leap to editing in 2016. Since then, she has been working on fiction, documentary and TV series projects. Catherine invites you to trace the path of Amélie’s young career.

Catherine Legault is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and film editor. She graduated from Film Production at Concordia University’s Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema, in Montreal. Over the past 20 years, she has worked on several films that have screened internationally in theatres, festivals, and on television. Her collaborations have included PilgrIMAGE, by Peter Wintonick and Mira Burt-Wintonick, Mort subite d’un homme-théâtre, by Jean-Claude Coulbois, Les manèges humains, by Martin Laroche, The Wandering Muse, by Tamas Wormser, La démolition familiale by Patrick Damien, Les lettres de ma mère, by Serge Giguère, and Rebels on Pointe and FANNY: The Right to Rock, by Bobbi Jo Hart. Recipient of two Gémeaux awards for her TV series editing work, she received the Iris award for Best Documentary Editing at the Gala Québec Cinéma for La démolition familiale, in 2017. She was nominated again for Les lettres de ma mère and Fanny: The Right to Rock. In 2019, Catherine directed her first feature documentary, Sisters: Dream & Variations, which was awarded at the IndieFEST Film Awards in five categories and at the Gala Québec Cinéma for Best Documentary Original Score. Catherine is currently in production for her next film, LARRY (They/them), which will be released in 2023.

Offrez-vous une pause-café et joignez-vous à nous pour une causerie d’après-midi avec Chase Joynt (FRAMING AGNES) et Aisling Chin-Yee (CELLES QUI RESTENT) qui ont réalisé NO ORDINARY MAN, leur documentaire reconnu. Ils nous parleront de l’approche qu’ils ont adoptée pour leur montage.

Ce film sensible entremêle de façon naturelle des images d’archive, des enregistrements audio, des témoignages et des interprétations artistiques pour raconter l’histoire de Billy Tipton, un musicien de jazz éminent des années 1940 et 1950 et une icône de la culture trans.

Catherine Legault is an award-winning film editor and filmmaker. She navigates between documentary, animation and fiction, and her work is appreciated for its fluidity and structural sophistication layering different levels of meaning throughout.

She graduated from Film Production at Concordia University’s Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema. Over the past 17 years, she has worked on several award-winning films that have screened internationally in theatres, festivals, and on television. In 2017, she received an Iris award at the Gala Québec Cinéma for Best Documentary Editing. She was nominated again in 2019. She was also awarded two Gemeaux for her editing work. Her collaborations have included PilgrIMAGE, by Peter Wintonick and Mira Burt-Wintonick, MORT SUBITE D’UN HOMME-THÉ TRE, by Jean-Claude Coulbois, FAMILY DEMOLITION by Patrick Damien, REBELS ON POINTE, by Bobbi Jo Hart, MY MOTHER’S LETTERS, by Serge Giguère, and most recently, FANNY: THE RIGHT TO ROCK, by Bobbi Jo Hart. Her first feature documentary as a director, SISTERS: DREAM & VARIATIONS, was awarded at The IndieFEST Film Awards in five categories and is in nomination for Best Original Music at the Gala Québec Cinéma.

In 2015, she directed the multi-award-winning documentary, SYNESTHESIA, which won Best Short Documentary at the International Crossroads Film Festival. She produced the gritty urban drama, THE SAVER, which was released in Spring 2016, the political documentary, INSIDE THESE WALLS, and the television series Lost Generation that same year.Alongside filmmaking, Aisling is an outspoken advocate for equality and diverse representation on and off screen. In 2016, she co-founded the #AfterMeToo movement, which includes a fund, roundtable series, and report that brings to light the issue of sexual misconduct in the entertainment industry. In 2018 she was selected in the inaugural cohort of professionals in the 50 Women Can Change the World in Media and Entertainment in Hollywood.

Depuis une quinzaine d’années, Catherine Legault signe le montage de nombreux films documentaire et fiction présentés internationalement dans les festivals, au cinéma et à la télévision.

Diplômée de l’Université Concordia en Film Production, elle est récipiendaire d’un prix Iris pour le montage de « La démolition familiale », en 2017, ainsi que de deux Gémeaux pour « 21 jours », en 2017, et pour « Ma caravane au Québec », en 2013. En 2019, elle est de nouveau en nomination au gala Québec Cinéma pour le montage du film de Serge Giguère, « Les lettres de ma mère ». Ses collaborations incluent plusieurs films primés, parmi lesquels « PilgrIMAGE », de Peter Wintonick et Mira Burt-Wintonick, « Mort subite d’un homme-théâtre », de Jean-Claude Coulbois, « La démolition familiale », de Patrick Damien, « Rebels on Pointe », de Bobbi Jo Hart, « Les lettres de ma mère », de Serge Giguère, et plus récemment, « FANNY: The Right to Rock », de Bobbi Jo Hart. En 2019, Catherine réalise et monte son premier long-métrage documentaire « Sisters: Dream & Variations ».

Catherine valorise la place du montage dans le processus de création. Elle est habituée à travailler avec une grande quantité de matériel provenant de sources variées et l’intégration d’archives vient couramment enrichir sa construction narrative. Ses montages sont appréciés pour leur sensibilité et leur fluidité, leurs différents niveaux de lecture et leur habilité à naviguer à travers l’espace et la temporalité. L’art dans toutes ses formes, le voyage, la famille et la transmission intergénérationnelle sont des thèmes qui ont souvent accompagné Catherine dans sa pratique du montage.
