Members from the CCE have had the amazing opportunity to participate in a mentorship program with Coma Edits this year. Each quarter, Coma Edits takes 3 of our members and provides them with an incredible insight into the collaborative process of editing different projects.
Coma Edits has an open door policy, where they welcome mentees to drop by and work, not just during their mentoring time but on-going. The CCE is truly thankful for this partnership and appreciates all the care that is taken with our members under the guidance of the Coma Edits Team.

I had an incredibly valuable experience during my mentorship at Coma Edits. The team was welcoming and warm, and their knowledge and advice was helpful for me as someone getting started in the film & TV industry in picture editing. The shadow shifts where I learned the workflow at Coma Edits allowed me to understand not only the inner workings of an editing house, but how to be a better assistant editor. I was also included in deciding the focus of each session, so I felt that what I specifically could gain from the mentorship was a priority of the team. Coma Edits provided a great learning environment for me and I would recommend a mentorship there for any other assistant editors starting out in the industry.
The biggest benefit of my mentorship with Taylor and her staff at Coma Edits was that it felt like a lifeline when I needed it the most. I have been struggling to find my footing in the assisting space since graduating from Sheridan and joining the DGC through the GAP program two-and-a-half years ago. Since the post-world shifted to remote work I have found it nearly impossible to get in-person live mentorship. Taylor?s unique practice of doing live in-person mentoring sets her apart from the rest. The opportunity to mentor in person has all but disappeared today. Yet with Coma Edits and Taylor?s generous support it is a reality. I am grateful to the CCE for this opportunity. It has made me feel a part of the larger editing community in Toronto, more so than any other program or workshop. It?s one thing to learn independently through self-teaching and online workshops. But to mentor in person is a huge opportunity to experience the workload first hand. As well, it provides invaluable networking opportunities by meeting people in post first hand. Through this mentorship, Coma Edits and the CCE have provided me with a significant boost in confidence. For someone like me who is building a second career in post, making long lasting contacts is the main key to success. For this reason alone this CCE mentorship through Coma Edits feels nothing short of a light at the end of a long, lonely tunnel of working from home.
Coma Edits Mentorship program offered by CCE provided me with an incredible insight into the collaborative process of editing different projects. As an emerging filmmaker in need of guidance, I found the mentorship sessions to be invaluable. Taylor G McConnachie, the Senior Editor and Co-Owner of Coma Edits, is a passionate editor and mentor. She answered all my questions about technical aspects of editing workflow in detail and with clarity. Spending 3 days at Coma Edits studio taught important lessons on teamwork, attention to detail, creative ideas, communicative skills and professionalism. Watching the studio work on and discuss the edit of a large project was an engaging experience that provided a rare look at how a team operates to fine-tune the cuts, works with different collaborators, and solves problems.
Participating in Coma Edits also provides an amazing opportunity to meet new collaborators and connect with filmmakers.
I recommend Coma Edits Mentorship program to anyone who is pursuing a path in editing.
The Coma Edits Team were incredibly welcoming, and they truly made me feel like family. First, I met with founder Taylor Mcconnachie, who clearly explained Coma’s creative vision to me. Later on, I was privileged to sit in on a couple production meetings, including with producers and talent, where I could learn first hand how to receive feedback from production. There were many opportunities to learn the art of editing, and I was tutored one-on-one by lead assistant editor Olive Reed on industry standard project management. Adding further to this expertise, I was included in the story editing process for a feature documentary. Finally, I was even invited to attend the shooting of a music video. Throughout the whole process, the Coma Team showed me understanding, caring, and genuine help. I gained a greater appreciation for storytelling through the edit, as well as for how post-production professionals can work together to accomplish a project’s vision. I was very fortunate to spend time learning with them. I feel I have become a more professional, and also more amiable editor. I recommend anyone working in post to check out the multiple mentorship opportunities Coma offers.
The Coma Edits mentorship was a fantastic experience, Taylor and her amazing team were kind, generous, and willing to help me in anyway with my editing journey. Whether it was any questions about getting more in depth with different softwares, the post-production process and so much more. I highly recommend anyone to look to Coma Edits for a mentorship, and a huge thanks to the CCE for this opportunity! The CCE was instrumental in making this all happen. They have been paramount in my growth as an editor as well, and together the CCE and Coma Edits have helped me take that next step. Thank you again!
